Tony Cascarino believes Roberto is possibly the worst goalkeeper in Premier League history.

In his weekly column for The Times, Cascarino provided a 112-word character assassination on the West Ham flop titled ‘Rickety Roberto may be worst keeper I’ve seen‘. The ex-Millwall striker can’t work out how Roberto has kept his place ahead of David Martin.

In his ‘Weekend Talking Points’ column for The Times, Cascarino wrote: “I’m doing a gig with Alvin Martin, the ex-England defender, on Thursday and I’ll be asking him what on earth his son David has to do to get in the West Ham team.

“With Lukasz Fabianski out injured, Martin is on the bench. He’s been kept out by Roberto and I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a worse goalkeeper in the Premier League. Game after game he’s making mistake after mistake.

“He’s been so poor I don’t know why he’s keeping his place. Martin may be 33 and he may have spent most of his career away from the top flight with MK Dons, but he must be a more solid option.”

The continual selection of Roberto is just one of the signs that Manuel Pellegrini does not know what he is doing. It defies belief that the Spaniard has kept his place in the team – even if the alternative is not all that appealing.

Roberto is making mistakes in every game and his confidence is low. It is time to give Martin the gloves until Fabianski returns. If nothing else, he will give the West Ham players a fresh outlook. His team-mates are clearly not confident in Roberto’s ability and Martin needs a chance.
