Former Arsenal and West Ham striker Ian Wright has told BBC 5 Live Sport that believes Declan Rice is a better holding midfielder than Eric Dier at the moment.
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dier has been performing the defensive midfield role for England in the past. But Wright thinks it is time that Rice took the starting shirt from his North London-based counterpart.
Rice has recently pledged his allegiance to England and he is expected to receive his first call-up immediately, as per The Telegraph.
The 20-year-old has been the standout outfield player for the Hammers this season and any West Ham fan will tell you that a call-up is thoroughly deserved.
And now pundits are sharing these opinions with Wright claiming that Dier should be dropped and replaced by Rice for the upcoming international games.
Ian Wright on the Eric Dier vs. Declan Rice debate
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live Sport, Wright said: “It’s a position that we struggle to fill. We haven’t really got that player who can naturally do the role as good as we’re seeing Declan Rice do it at the minute.”
Then, when Chris Sutton quizzed Wright on whether Rice is better than Dier, he added: “Yeah, especially in that position. And plus, Eric’s not playing at the moment. At the same time, we’re talking about somebody who’s in top form at the minute.
“I say bring him in and let’s have a look. He looks like he’s got everything; comfortable on his right side, comfortable on his left side, sees danger, scores goals. What are waiting for?”
