‘Dodged a bullet’: West Ham fans relieved they didn’t sign £56m Tottenham loanee

Some West Ham fans have suggested on Twitter that they dodged a bullet by missing out on Gedson Fernandes in January. Tottenham ended up winning the race for the Portuguese starlet.

West Ham ace Soucek has flourished at the London Stadium while Spurs midfielder Fernandes has struggled terribly at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium.

The Hammers were close to agreeing a deal to sign the 21-year-old in January on loan with an obligation to buy for £33 million, according to a report from Sky Sports.

The east London outfit’s pursuit of the 21-year-old aroused Tottenham’s interest, however.

And the Portuguese starlet ended up joining Spurs on an 18-month loan deal. The north London club allegedly have an option to buy the midfielder for £56 million in the summer of 2021 (The Sun).

Fernandes has really struggled in north London, however. The Portuguese youngster has made just 13 appearances for Tottenham, and he is still yet to rack up either a goal or an assist.
