West Ham fan favourite Robert Snodgrass has signed a new deal. The club’s official website has confirmed that Snodgrass has signed a one-year extension at West Ham.
He was entering the final year of his current contract. But the left-footed midfielder has earned himself a new deal after proving doubters wrong in the 2018/19 season.
Snodgrass spent the 2017/18 campaign on loan at Aston Villa and was publicly criticised by the Hammers board. Many believed that Snodgrass would never play for West Ham again.
But the Scotsman knuckled down and earned himself a chance under Manuel Pellegrini. Impressed with what he saw, Pellegrini decided to use Snodgrass in his squad.
Last season, Snodgrass scored four goals and provided nine assists in an impressive individual campaign. His work ethic and set-piece deliveries were particularly eye-catching.
West Ham insider EXWHUEmployee recently revealed that Leeds United wanted Snodgrass. But Pellegrini is clearly a big fan of the hardworking 31-year-old, who will now stay at West Ham for two more years.
Robert Snodgrass’ role next season
Snodgrass might have a reduced role next season but he is still an important squad player. As an impact substitute, he is useful to bring on if West Ham are searching for a goal as he has a sublime delivery with his left foot. And his relentless running means he can now operate in a central midfield role.
The arrival of Pablo Fornals, combined with the return to fitness of Jack Wilshere and Manuel Lanzini, means that Snodgrass will probably be a back-up option.
Moreover, Michail Antonio, Felipe Anderson and Andriy Yarmolenko are likely to be preferred out wide. But Snodgrass will work hard to get into the team and provide West Ham with healthy competition for places.
