Despite a setback after a dubious VAR ruling, the Hammers went on to beat the Blues 3-2. And the result had huge significance regarding the fight for survival.
West Ham now sit three points clear of 18th placed Aston Villa and 19th placed Bournemouth.
Perhaps now the Hammers can start looking forward. They certainly have the players needed to push on up the table.
In Michail Antonio, the east London outfit have a player who gives 100 per cent to the cause week-in, week-out.
The powerful 30-year-old attacker was everywhere last night. He never stopped working. And even though he was playing out of position yet again, he caused Chelsea all sorts of problems.
When speaking to reporters after last night’s win over the Blues, Moyes absolutely raved about Antonio, as quoted by Football.London:
“He has been great for us at the moment but being without Seb [Haller] we are short of options and alternatives to Mick. I have to say, Mick stuck to the task. When I came in he was still recovering from hamstring injuries and we were worried if we could get 90 minutes out of him but he’s doing a great job for the team.”
On his day, Antonio is a real handful. And West Ham need him to be at his best between now and the end of the season.
With Sebastien Haller allegedly closing in on a return, the 30-year-old former Nottingham Forest ace will be able to play out wide where he is more comfortable and arguably more dangerous.
Hopefully this is the start of more exciting times to come.
It’s Newcastle away up next for the Hammers on Sunday. And Moyes’s men will now be confident of taking a positive result away with them from St James’ Park.
