David Moyes has responded emphatically to Tony Cascarino after the talkSPORT pundit recently suggested that qualifying for Europe this season could be a ‘poisoned chalice’ for West Ham United.

The Hammers are currently flying high in fifth spot in the Premier League table, just two points adrift of fourth placed Chelsea.

If West Ham were to qualify for either the Champions League or the Europa League this season, we will obviously have a lot more games to contend with next season.

Tony Cascarino claimed that those extra games could end up being a problem for the Hammers.

David Moyes doesn’t agree with Tony Cascarino

In principle, he’s right. But surely the West Ham owners would back Moyes financially so he is able to strengthen his squad accordingly. Surely!

Either way, Moyes responded to Cascarino’s claim, when speaking to Football.London yesterday:

“I’ve not seen it or heard it but I would hope it wouldn’t. I hope it would bring in more finances and help attract players and be a positive, an incredibly big and positive step for a club. If you get in the Champions League it is not often you can do it. I am hoping to hang in there and hang onto the coattails of one or two of those above us. I would see it as a positive thing, in fact, an incredibly positive thing if we can get in the Champions League. The financial situation and also just to reiterate what a difference it would make to West Ham.”

Qualifying for the Champions League this season might be a stretch considering our lack of squad depth.

We should be more than capable of finishing inside the top six, however.

European football would be a great thing for West Ham. We as fans deserve it. If we finish the season off well, we have every chance of cracking the top six.

And rather than be pessimistic like Cascarino let’s embrace it. Let the good times roll!
