West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini led West Ham to a top-half finish in his first season in the job. And he seems satisfied, although not delighted, with this performance.
After battling relegation under David Moyes, Pellegrini has ensured that this was not repeated. West Ham had achieved Premier League safety long before the end of the season.
The Hammers have also, at times, played better football under Pellegrini, scoring more goals. The defence has been a bit leakier – something which Pellegrini knows needs addressing.
As reported by West Ham’s official Twitter account, Pellegrini said: “For the first season, to finish in the top 10 is not bad. We have improved in points, goals scored and goals conceded. So compared with the last season we have grown a step.”
Attention now turns to next season. West Ham have a busy summer ahead and their business will determine how successful the 2019/20 campaign can be.
Pellegrini delivered a reasonable first season at West Ham manager, all things considered. His top striker (Marko Arnautovic) tried to leave in January and injuries have been a major problem.
Here are some tweets from West Ham fans discussing Pellegrini’s comments and the chances of success in 2019/20.
Significant step. May not seem much on paper but the whole feel about the club is different

Small improvement each season, since moving to the London Stadium. Another small step next season, must be the only requirement. Remember how do you eat a elephant?

Great season 2018/19. Some really good individual performances. We ended up higher as mentioned previously. We should concentrate and remember that plus we had lots of injuries and we still came 10. Can’t wait for the new season to be honest.

The main improvement this season is the style of football we played. At least I can see what we are trying to do now and when it worked it was very pleasing on the eye.

Hopefully the board will back him to grow another step next season.
