West Ham defender Fabian Balbuena has been named in Paraguay’s preliminary squad ahead of this summer’s tournament, whufc.com reports.
Paraguay have named a 39-man initial squad for their Copa America campaign in June. Balbuena has a place in the squad, alongside Newcastle United’s Miguel Almiron.
The Hammers centre-back will be hoping to make the final cut. If so, he will travel to Brazil with his Paraguay team-mates and compete in the Copa America.
West Ham signed Balbuena from Brazilian side Corinthians last summer in a bargain deal. He has since established himself as a key player at West Ham.
The 27-year-old played 23 Premier League games for the Hammers. He missed the middle chunk of the season through injury but returned to partner Issa Diop at the back.
Balbuena’s holiday will be cut short as he heads for international duty. He will be hoping to add to his nine Paraguay caps. And the Hammers will expect Balbuena to make the final squad after an impressive debut season in England.
Here are some tweets from West Ham fans congratulating ‘The General’ on his international call-up.
