Angelo Ogbonna was proud of West Ham United captain Mark Noble’s performance against Chelsea despite criticism from fans.

West Ham supporters were surprised to see Noble in the starting line-up at Stamford Bridge.

And the skipper came in for some criticism after West Ham were harshly beaten 3-0.

Noble’s playing days coming to an end?

Noble is a certified West Ham legend. Nothing will change that.

But his playing future at West Ham has been under intense scrutiny for some time.

And he was adjudged by many to be too slow and too immobile for the modern day Premier League after his display against Chelsea.

On the flip side had West Ham made more of their opportunities and not had Jarrod Bowen’s goal inexplicably ruled out, then it could have been a very different story.

Speaking after the game Hammer of the Year contender Angelo Ogbonna defended Noble (whufc.com).

And the Italian explained why in fact he was proud of the captain’s return to the side.

“We played really well but this is football because they got their chances and we got our chances, but most of the time we kept the ball,” Ogbonna told whufc.com.

“(As a team) we had a lot of possession but maybe we weren’t clinical enough.

“We played against a tough team and I’m proud of the way we played. I’m also proud that Nobes came back in and he helped the team to keep the ball and most of the time we had the ball.”

With Manuel Lanzini back fit for the game against Brighton, many West Ham fans want to see the Argentine or Said Benrahma take Noble’s place in the side.

The reality is the Hammers have been poor in front of goal in the last four games.

The defeat against Manchester United should have been put to bed long before the Red Devils equalised.

And up at Leeds West Ham won 2-1 but missed a host of chances to make things a lot more comfortable.

Against Crystal Palace, against 10 men for some time, West Ham failed to carve out many chances.

And the Chelsea game was another example of West Ham lacking guile at times.
