But the Hammers only remained there on goal difference after Watford’s shock win over Liverpool and Bournemouth’s draw against Chelsea.
The results have pushed the projected points total to survive from 36 to 38.

So West Ham need another four wins, or three and three draws, to secure safety.
If West Ham can pull a rabbit out of the hat with a result at Arsenal they look likely to stave off a quick return to the drop zone.
And that will make a big statement in the survival race.

The Hammers are at the Emirates while Bournemouth go to Liverpool, Watford to Palace, Brighton to Wolves and Aston Villa to Leicester.
Newcastle and Norwich also face tough trips to Southampton and Sheffield United respectively.

But this weekend it is the away form which could have a massive say in the battle against the drop.
A point for West Ham would pull them level with Brighton if the Seagulls lose at Champions League chasing Wolves.
It certainly promises to be an interesting and nail biting weekend for all involved.
