West Ham host Tottenham Hotspur this Saturday in what promises to be an exciting game.

Spurs will be eager to continue their good run of form but West Ham are no pushover, as they showed against Chelsea and Manchester United at home.

And the Hammers will surely be up for a London derby clash at The London Stadium.

Both sides’ defences will be expected to deal with some talented attacking players. But how do they compare going into this match?

We look at West Ham’s centre-back duo Issa Diop and Fabian Balbuena and compare their statistics to Spurs’ established pairing of Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld.

Vertonghen is not fit for this weekend’s game but he is usually present at the back so we look at his stats.

All of our stats are sourced from the official Premier League website.

Clean sheets

Surprisingly, Tottenham have only managed three clean sheets this season. And two of those were against goal-shy Huddersfield Town and Cardiff City.

Alderweireld has been present for all three but Vertonghen has only played the full 90 minutes in one of those games.

He missed the Cardiff game and was taken off at half-time against Huddersfield with injury.

West Ham, on the other hand, have been leaky at the back. The Irons only have one clean sheet this season and that came in a 0-0 draw with Chelsea.

Diop tops the list in terms of blocks. The young Frenchman has made six blocks despite playing less games.

Alderweireld and Balbuena have four each and Vertonghen has made three blocks.

Balbuena’s reading of the game has been clear to see and it is no surprise that he has made the most interceptions of these four.

The Paraguay international’s tally of 22 interceptions eclipses team-mate Diop, who has made nine interceptions.

Vertonghen has recorded 12 and Alderweireld trails behind on six.

Once again, Balbuena’s figure towers above the other three here.

The 27-year-old has made a staggering 62 clearances, nearly double the 34 and 33 made by Alderweireld and Vertonghen respectively. And Diop has made 32 clearances.

Vertonghen leads the way in terms of tackles with 15. Balbuena is second on 14, while Alderweireld (11) and Diop (10) are not far behind.

Balbuena is once again the standout defender with these statistics. He has won more aerial battles (20) and made more headed clearances (29) than the other three.

Vertonghen is next with 15 aerial battles won and 19 headed clearances.

Diop is in third place with 13 duels won and 17 headed clearances, while Alderweireld brings up the rear with 10 aerial duels won and 12 headed clearances.

Balbuena has made more fouls (seven) than Alderweireld (three) and Vertonghen and Diop (two).

All players have one yellow card, other than Vertonghen. The Spurs men stand out in terms of passing stats and Vertonghen is the only player to have scored a goal in the league this season.
