Rice comments shows he has the mentality to succeed at West Ham

As the youngster vowed to get back out and prove his worth, Declan Rice has shown he can succeed at West Ham.

The 19-year-old was run ragged by Liverpool in a brutal opening-day performance. Up against some of the most energetic forwards in the Premier League, Rice suffered a nasty lesson.

The performances of all three central midfielders led to calls of a midfield overhaul for this weekend’s Bournemouth clash.

However, Rice has impressed by coming out and talking about his urge to bounce back at the London Stadium.

Speaking to the official West Ham website, Rice expressed his ambition to impress Manuel Pellegrini.

Liverpool was a really tough game, we know that. For me, personally, I came off at half-time. It was a tough game and I know I can play better than I showed. I’ve been training really well this week and we’ve got two more sessions until Saturday’s game. I just want to keep improving and keep showing the manager that I’m the right man to play.

The youngster has shown with these comments that he has the mentality and determination to succeed at the club. However, he’ll soon have to start showing it on the pitch.

Rice isn’t fazed by the criticism or the mockery from opposition fans. The only thing on the 19-year-old’s priorities is to get back out and show everyone what he’s capable of.

You have to give credit to the midfielder for coming out and taking responsibility. Rice has proven he has no desire to shrink and hide. Given how cut-throat an environment football in London can be, the midfielder’s attitude has to be praised.

It will mean little to supporters who just want to see Rice performing instead of talking about it. However, Rice has clearly dusted himself down and is ready to prove himself once again.

That shows he has the mentality. The question now is whether he has the ability to back it up.
