Ray Parlour says Arsenal were lucky and delivers verdict on West Ham survival chances

Arsenal legend and boyhood West Ham United fan Ray Parlour has been discussing yesterday’s clash.

West Ham somehow managed to lose 1-0 to a lacklustre Arsenal side in a game the Hammers dominated.

Sebastien Haller and Michail Antonio wasted a host of clear cut chances as West Ham passed up more crucial points in their battle against relegation.

The Hammers should have been at least a couple of goals to the good going in at half-time.

And it was much the same in the second half.

But a lucky deflection from a speculative shot from distance by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang landed on the head of Mesut Ozil who was onside when he guided it across for substitute Alexandre Lacazette to score late on.

The goal was unerringly similar to that which saw West Ham emerge with nothing to show for their efforts against Liverpool at Anfield in their last away game.

After the match Parlour – who has previously lifted the lid on his life growing up as a Hammer in a brilliant interview with Football Daily – admitted Arsenal were fortunate to win the game.

And the Romford Pele is backing West Ham to stay up IF they can keep their performance levels up.

“At the Emirates after the West Ham game, (Arsenal) were a little bit lucky today,” Parlour said in a video message on Twitter.

“But it was a great three points for Arsenal.

“I’m sure West Ham will stay up if they keep playing the way they are.”

Parlour’s sentiments were echoed by Sky Sports pundit Matt Le Tissier and talkSPORT commentator John Motson.

West Ham get pundit plaudits but need points

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Gillette Soccer Saturday programme after the game, Le Tissier said he is ‘fairly confident’ West Ham will not go down.

The Premier League legend has watched David Moyes’s side two weeks in a row, first beating his former side Southampton 3-1 and now as their profligacy cost them against Arsenal.

Legendary pundit Motson feels the same.

He told talkSPORT’s Hawksbee and Jacobs show they will get out of it.

It is all well and good having the backing of the pundits. But West Ham must ignore all the talk and go out and get the points on the board. Nothing else matters at this stage.
