Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has highlighted what has shocked him about David Moyes at West Ham United.
Moyes was an unpopular choice among West Ham fans when he was re-appointed back in December.
Supporters appreciated he did a decent job in difficult circumstances when he saved them from relegation back in 2017/18.
But the Hammers faithful wanted a more progressive appointment.
Owners David Sullivan and David Gold looked to have been vindicated when Moyes won his first game back 4-0 against Bournemouth.
Moyes struggling to lift West Ham away from danger
But he has failed to win a single league game since in eight attempts, taking only two points in that time.
West Ham also crashed out of the FA Cup at home to Championship side West Bromwich Albion.
It has left some supporters questioning whether the club were right to get rid of Manuel Pellegrini in the first place if Moyes was to be the alternative.
While Pellegrini was overseeing a torrid season the general feeling is that he would have done enough to keep the club up.
Evidence in the form of cold, hard statistics was presented by Sky Sports pundit Carragher on Monday Night Football.
Statistics show Hammers were better under Pellegrini
The figures show a shocking decline in key areas under Moyes.
Under Pellegrini West Ham ranked 11th in the Premier League for possession with 48%. Under Moyes it has dropped to 19th (37%).
Passes completed under Pellegrini, West Ham were also 11th with 339 per game. Under Moyes that has dropped to 15h with 271.
Sequences of 10+ passes under Pellegrini West Ham were 11th with 6.7 per game while under Moyes there is a drop to 16th with 4.4.
West Ham had 10.8 shots per game under Pellegrini (10th best in the PL) compared to 9.3 under Moyes (19th).
Moyes has a reputation for being organised and tightening things up defensively.
But shots faced has also increased under the Scot with 14 per game compared to 13 under Pellegrini. That is the 14th worst in the top flight.
One damning statistic in particular is ringing alarm bells for Carragher, though.
West Ham’s passes per defensive action – ie the passes completed by the opposition before West Ham take defensive action – is a staggering 20, the worst in the entire division.
Under Pellegrini the Hammers were 10th with 12 passes per defensive action.
Carragher shocked West Ham under Moyes
“It hasn’t gone well,” Carragher told MNF.
“A lot of the chat around David Moyes since he came in is not just the results but how he’s gone about it.
“David Moyes has been brought in to do it differently to Pellegrini, to make them more solid.
“The big problem I have, is where I see David Moyes’s West Ham are the worst in the league for passes per defensive action which is basically challenges, tackles, anything to stop the opposition.
“A simple way of saying it is that the opposition have 20 passes before a West Ham player gets near someone to make a challenge.
“That’s why you bring David Moyes in. You shouldn’t be 20th on that, you should be top, that’s what I would say, that’s the big disappointment.”
There were positive signs in the plucky 3-2 defeat to Liverpool on Monday night, though.
West Ham were desperately unlucky not to take anything at Anfield.
And it should give Moyes’s side a confidence boost going into a crucial home game against Southampton this weekend.
