West Ham United will take anything they can get in the increasingly tense relegation battle.

The Hammers lifted themselves out of the relegation zone with a 3-1 victory over Southampton on Saturday.

But they only remained out of the bottom three on goal difference after Watford’s shock win over Liverpool and Bournemouth’s draw against Chelsea.

West Ham breathe life into survival bid

With 10 games to go David Moyes’s West Ham side need to win four games – or three and three draws – to have a realistic chance of survival.

The projected points total needed to stay up is now up around the 39 mark.

So Moyes and West Ham fans will take anything they can get when it comes to straws to clutch at over survival.

And former player Frank Lampard may have provided one on Tuesday night.

He may be an unpopular figure at West Ham.

But Lampard may have just done West Ham a big favour in the relegation battle by masterminding Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Liverpool in the FA Cup.

It means back-to-back defeats for the Reds. In fact it is three defeats in the last four games. The only game they have won in that time is against West Ham – and even then the Hammers deserved at least a draw after taking a second half lead at Anfield.

Liverpool now face West Ham’s relegation rivals Bournemouth at Anfield on Saturday.

Some West Ham fans might fear it is a good time for the Cherries to be playing Jurgen Klopp’s side.

But they will be facing a wounded animal.

And that could result in a serious mauling for the visitors.

West Ham have their own difficult game to contend with away at Arsenal.

So a defeat for Bournemouth – and some potentially crucial damage to their goal difference – could be vital to West Ham’s chances of staying up when all is said and done.

If Bournemouth do lose at Anfield, defeat for Aston Villa at Leicester on Monday night or for Watford at Crystal Palace will keep West Ham out of the bottom three going into the home game against Wolves regardless of the result at Arsenal.

And West Ham fans looking for positives in their side’s favour will note that Nuno Espirito Santo’s team will have distractions of their own ahead the trip to the London Stadium.
