West Ham United have slipped into the relegation zone and the doom and gloom merchants are out in force.

West Ham were twice in a commanding two-goal lead against fellow strugglers Brighton last time out.

But a dismal collapse saw the Hammers left clinging on for a 3-3 draw.

With back-to-back away games against Manchester City and Liverpool up next things don’t get any easier for David Moyes.

Dark clouds gather over West Ham

At the moment it is difficult for West Ham fans to find any positives.

And former Hammers midfielder Gary O’Neill is struggling to find any either.

Speaking as a guest on Sky Sports’s The Debate on Monday night, O’Neill delivered a crushing verdict on West Ham’s chances of survival and says Manuel Lanzini is finished.

“I knew they had problems anyway (before the Brighton collapse),” O’Neill told The Debate.

“I hate to say it because I loved my time there and it’s a real good club and I really want them to stay up, but I am really worried for them at the minute. Defensively they are all over the place as well, they’ve got no pace or anything going forward.

Ex Hammer delivers brutal verdict on survival chances and Lanzini

“Lanzini is a fantastic player (in that) he’s good on the ball but he’s lost a yard since he’s had his injuries and when you’re playing that end of the pitch if you lose a yard of pace, you’re finished, you’re nowhere near the same player.

“They’ve signed (Sebastien) Haller who was fantastic playing in a two up front and now they can’t play a two because they need three in midfield because they haven’t got the legs so he has to play up front on his own.

“I saw them at Burnley… and when you go to Burnley you know what you’re going to get and their centre halves got battered. If you’re in a relegation battle and you go to Burnley and your centre halves fold as easily as they did, I really worry for them.”

Hard to disagree with O’Neill

O’Neill is saying what many West Ham fans are thinking.

And he makes a salient point about Lanzini. Fifteen years ago the Argentine’s knee injury could have been career-ending.

But West Ham somehow decided to reward an already injury-prone, under-performing player with a new four-year contract on £100,000 per week before he had even suggested he was capable of rediscovering his form and fitness.

If Lanzini does still have some magic left in his boots now is the time to start showing it.

West Ham have 14 games to go and need five wins to secure safety.
