Since the days of Dean Ashton, West Ham have lacked a prolific goal scorer. Recently, Andy Carroll has hit prolific goal scoring form, but since he is just a loan signing, will he be here next season?
Recent reports have suggested that a bid will be made for Andy Carroll, with a sum of around £10-12 million being touted, short of the agreed £17million. Up until yesterday, this deal seemed likely, but Allardyce said that financial fair play rules could make the deal impossible. Could this however be another case of smoke and mirrors? Could this be a tactical ploy to make Liverpool lower their asking price and Carroll to lower his wage demands? It seems unlikely, but we have seen it all too often.
If Carroll is not available, where do we look? Bony? With similar asking price and perhaps similar wage demands, we are also surely priced out of a deal for that? One option who has recently proven himself in the Premier League is Loic Remy. Scoring many goals for QPR including his first against West Ham and a recent screamer against Wigan, he would be a fantastic signing. Release clause? Apparently so, at £8 million, Remy would be a bargain and even with high wage demands, the lower fee would make the deal possible. It is clear however that we will not be the only team chasing his signature, given his impressive, perhaps short stint, in the Premier League.
Past these, would we be looking towards the Championship? I fear so. Who are our options? In my opinion: Charlie Austin, Matej Vydra, the recently reported Jordan Rhodes and as much as it may hurt, Thomas Ince. Austin and Vydra are both fantastic goal scorers. Charlie Austin had an astonishing start to the season, and while it has tailed off slightly, his goal scoring return has still been fantastic. Vydra, player of the year and great goals all year round. My first choice. He would make a great signing. Rhodes, well, he has scored goals for even a weak Blackburn side, he would make a good signing. Ince, well, we all know the reception he got last season, especially in the Play Off Final, and despite being more of a wide player, which we need anyway, he has a brilliant finish. I fear though, that if he came to West Ham, his time would end in a similar fashion to his father’s. One more, buy back Sam Baldock. He has scored a few goals amongst a shocking Bristol City side and would add plenty of strength in depth to our attacking line.
Big Sam and the owners have choices to make in the summer, we all want Carroll at West Ham and I feel he wants to stay with us. Even if we do make this transfer however, I would still like to see one of the Championship strikers come in, as well as keeping Maïga. Maïga and one of those strikers would be a force to contend with in cups! Forward Thinking
