West Ham United can qualify for Europe this season. That is according to Jack Wilshere, as reported by The Mirror.
You can feel almost the sighs from West Ham fans who live in the real world.
West Ham boy comes home, he has to play the game and aim for the stars doesn’t he.
Indeed who is to say Wilshere is wrong? After all West Ham have sanctioned unprecedented spending this summer to the tune of more than £90 million thus far in backing new boss Manuel Pellegrini – himself an impressive capture.
The Hammers could have qualified for Europe last season if they had got their act together, after all Burnley have managed it and now they have an infinitely better squad.
But let’s assess the situation.
A player who rarely plays because of injury believes his new club can go from flirting with relegation to fighting for Europe.
There are just too many variables, especially when you throw in the fact the Premier League grows increasingly competitive each year.
Hammers fans will applaud Wilshere’s optimism, and there is nothing wrong with a bit of blue sky thinking.
But don’t run before you can walk Jack, because West Ham fans will be content with watching quality players trying to play good football in the tradition of this great club.
Europe can wait, West Ham need time to grow.
