Following last week’s man of the match performance against Everton, Declan Rice turned in another great display against Chelsea.
Rice continued in his role as a holding midfielder to good effect. He helped nullify Chelsea’s attacking threat and contributed towards a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw.
Once again, Rice was in the running for man of the match. We look at his performance in numbers (with stats from Who Scored) and analyse just how important he is to West Ham.
Rice vs. Chelsea
Rice was faced with the daunting task of ensuring Eden Hazard and his talented team-mates were unable to penetrate the West Ham defence.
The 19-year-old exceeded expectations and put in a great shift.
Rice was a brick wall in front of the defence, sweeping up with four interceptions. Furthermore, his tally of five clearances ensured Chelsea were denied as they approached West Ham’s goal.
The teenager also contributed with a tackle and his passing stats were impressive too.
He has impressed West Ham fans with his composure on the ball and he refused to panic, instead opting to pass it away.
Rice completed 28 passes at an impressive success rate of just under 80%.
New contract must be a priority
West Ham and Rice have been in negotiations over a new deal for quite a while.
These last two games have made this issue even more pressing. West Ham simply must get this new deal over the line.
The Republic of Ireland international’s stock will have risen after these matches and everyone at the club knows how talented this boy is.
According to Sky Sports News, West Ham are confident of reaching an agreement soon. This is good news as Rice has all the attributes to make it to the top level in the game.
