West Ham United hold the unenviable record of being the team relegated with the most points in Premier League history.

When the Hammers collected 42 points in the 2002/3 season they still dropped on the final day.

Before and since then the “40-point” mark has always been considered par to survive.

The reality is 36 points – on average – is usually enough to keep you up in the top flight.

Hammers face tall order

For West Ham this season that would mean another six wins – or five victories and some draws – in their remaining 16 games.

With just six wins from 22 all season so far, that already looks a tall order.

But it could be a case of deja vu for West Ham supporters given the fiercely competitive nature and points totals of their relegation rivals this season.

With Norwich languishing, it is looking increasingly like being two from six to fill the other relegation spots.

Just four points separate 14th placed Burnley and second bottom Watford.

At least 40, possibly record points to survive?

West Ham are only out of the bottom three on goal difference. That is a real advantage at the moment. But it could come under threat with four games against the current top three to come in the next five – with champions-elect Liverpool to play home and away.

With Watford already on 23 points, it likely means AT LEAST 40 points will be needed to stay up this term.

That means West Ham must somehow collect 17 points – possibly more – from their remaining 16 games.

The difficulty for West Ham will be putting any kind of run together.

Southampton have blasted clear of the relegation picture with a superb run.

But West Ham’s daunting fixtures, lack of strength in depth and injury situation will make that a difficult task for Moyes.
