Two West Ham academy starlets came face to face with each other in Saturday’s League Two clash between Stevenage and Northampton Town.

Moses Makasi was named in Stevenage’s starting line-up, operating as a defensive midfielder, while Joe Powell started for the visitors.

And it was a day to remember for Powell, who netted his first ever senior goal to inspire Northampton to victory.

In his fourth appearance for the Cobblers, Powell scored his first ever professional goal to give Northampton the lead.

19 minutes into the game, Powell collected the ball from Sam Hoskins and remained composed enough to provide the finishing touch.

The game ended 2-1 after Stevenage fought back and Northampton scored a late winner. This could be the first of many goals in the 20-year-old’s career if he can fulfil his potential.

Powell is highly rated by West Ham and was rewarded with his first ever senior appearance earlier this season.

The versatile midfielder came off the bench in West Ham’s 8-0 win over Macclesfield Town, providing two assists for fellow debutant Grady Diangana.

Powell operates in a number of positions but he is best in an attacking midfield role.

After watching Declan Rice and Diangana make their mark in the first-team, Powell will be eyeing his breakthrough in the future.
