George Earthy scored a stunning solo effort for West Ham United in their 3-0 National League Cup victory over Truro City but it was goalkeeper Krisztian Hegyi who interim coach Greg Lincoln singled out for praise.

Even the Truro supporters applauded a ‘stunning’ Hegyi performance in Cornwall. The entire stadium united in admiration.

West Ham United’s 23-year-old Hungarian pulled off a string of excellent stops throughout the second-half. So although George Earthy was the talk of Hammers fans – the England Under-21 international channelled his inner-Ravel Morrison with a goal reminiscent of that iconic solo effort against Tottenham over a decade ago – it was partly thanks to Hegyi that a Truro fightback was averted in Cornwall.

“We battled really hard,” says ex-Arsenal coach Lincoln, who took interim charge of the Under-21s after Nuno Espirito Santo promoted Mark Robson to his senior staff.

“And the boys, I think collectively and individually, we did a great job in terms of keeping that threat at bay, winning those first contacts and winning those second balls. We showed a positive attitude throughout.

“Hegyi made some outstanding saves when the game was at 2-0. And as we know, that scoreline, it can go either way if they get a goal, especially with a crowd of over 2,000 people there.

“I think all of the boys, the ones that started the game, the ones that finished the game, everyone played their part in that.”

A former Stevenage and Motherwell loanee, Krisztian Hegyi has been in superb form throughout November.

In his four games since returning from an injury which scuppered his temporary spell at Debrecen, Hegyi has helped West Ham qualify for the EFL Trophy knockout rounds while picking up four points from six at Premier League 2 level.
