West Ham are one of three clubs linked with Andre Almeida. According to The Express, West Ham, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Everton are battling for the Benfica right-back.
However, Wolves are in pole position to land Almeida. The lure of Europa League football, as well as the growing Portuguese contingent at Molineux, makes this a more preferrable destination for Almeida.
Benfica have just won the Portuguese league with Almeida playing a key role. To ensure they do not lose him on the cheap, Benfica will demand £8m for their full-back.
Who is Andre Almeida?
Almeida is a versatile player who has racked up just shy of 250 appearances since his 2011 move from Belenenses. He operates as a right-back or as a right-wing-back but he can also play on the left-hand side. Almeida has also played in defensive midfield.
The 8-cap Portugal international racked up 46 appearances for Benfica this season, providing 11 assists for team-mates. But it looks like his eight-year stay with the Portuguese heavyweights could be about to end.
West Ham are in the hunt to sign the 28-year-old but right-back might not be Manuel Pellegrini’s first priority. The Hammers are currently well-stocked in this department.
Ryan Fredericks was in top form towards the end of last season. Meanwhile, Pablo Zabaleta signed a new deal. And with Sam Byram back from his loan spell at Nottingham Forest and Ben Johnson pushing for a first-team promotion, Pellegrini might opt against spending £8m on a right-back.
