'Fall from grace' - West Ham fans react as young Hammer Reece Oxford endures nightmare afternoon for Augsburg

West Ham loanee Reece Oxford ended his temporary Bundesliga stint with a nightmare afternoon. Oxford’s FC Augsburg shipped eight goals in a terrible final display.

Oxford joined Augsburg in January on loan until the end of the season. The 6ft 3in centre-back was not getting any first-team opportunities under Manuel Pellegrini.

Instead, he was playing U23 football. Having had a taste of first-team football with 17 Hammers outings, as well as loan stints with Reading and Borussia Monchengladbach.

Chasing some senior minutes, Oxford left West Ham. He returned to Germany on loan, joining Augsburg, where he has had a mixed spell.

The 20-year-old has played a total of nine times for Augsburg. He was a regular starter before losing his place after being sent off against Freiburg.

But yesterday’s performance plummeted Oxford and Ausburg to new lows. The England U20 international played 90 minutes in defence as Augsburg lost 8-1 at Wolfsburg.

On a personal level, Oxford’s statistics were not too bad. He won five aerial duels (more than any other Augsburg player) and made 16 clearances, which was four times the amount of his nearest team-mate (stats via WhoScored).

But here are some tweets from West Ham fans after hearing of Oxford’s defence shipping eight goals.
