West Ham United boss David Moyes has been slammed by some fans for his substitutions following the 1-0 defeat to Arsenal.
Some West Ham fans have been critical of Moyes’s team selection and tactics since his return to the club in December.
The fact he has only won two of his 10 league games in charge gives those supporters plenty of ammunition.
Hammers show improvement but points are what they need
There have been some mitigating circumstances.
And performances have improved markedly since the unfortunate 3-2 defeat to Liverpool a few weeks ago.
The truth is West Ham should have won comfortably at the Emirates.
Gunners boss Mikel Arteta and striker Alexandre Lacazette even conceded West Ham should have won.
But they didn’t.
And a large number of fans have blamed Moyes for dithering when it comes to substitutions.
Hammers fans watching the game had been calling for Mark Noble to be replaced by fit again Tomas Soucek at half-time.
Fans had also been making their views clear that Moyes should have freshened up the forward line when it became clear after an hour that it was not going to be Michail Antonio or Sebastien Haller’s day.
Moyes criticised for ‘pointless’ late substitutions
The pair wasted chance after chance.
But Moyes did not make his first substitution until the 81st minute, replacing Noble with Soucek.
And he waited until the 87th and 90th minute to bring on Felipe Anderson and Robert Snodgrass.
The lateness of the subs left West Ham fans baffled with many of them labelling the tactics ‘pointless’.
After all what are Anderson or Snodgrass going to do with a few minutes left?
Some fans defended Moyes highlighting the performance and the fact Antonio and Haller had let the side down with their poor finishing.
Others responded claiming that is exactly why they should have been substituted long before the final knockings.
And some felt Jarrod Bowen should have been pushed up front instead.
Moyes was criticised by supporters on radio phone-ins, fan forums and social media after the game.
‘Gutless’ – ‘It’s the sign of a bad manager’
Here are a selection of comments from Twitter about Moyes’s substitutions.
We wonder why Moyes has such a bad record against Arsenal & it’s precisely because he doesn’t make changes!
Arsenal have always had pace &/or quality that can catch you out so why not keep the legs fresh?
He can’t stay here next season, he’s a tactical Dinosaur
— Steven McCarthy (@StevenMcCarthy9) March 7, 2020
Why keep him infront if goal when we have a striker on the wing
— Simeon (@levi_simeon) March 7, 2020
Some of our Fan’s clearly do not understand Football…
Yes we should have been clearly winning on chances…
But when Feck all is working you make changes….
Not once you go 1-0 Down…
Pony Manager…. Pony Result….
Chumpionship looming as under the Dinosaur….

Everything was working apart from Antonio’s boots. Nothing on the manager today, he set us up to win and if it wasn’t for Antonio we would have. Have a day off

noble should not start
— jackie connell (@jackie_connell) March 7, 2020
Talk me through why you’d make changes when you’re dominating arsenal away from home?
— JCHammer (@JCHammer13) March 7, 2020
I blame oyes for a lot of things but that result was nothing to do with him today, it was solely down to the wastefulness of Antonio and Haller, they should’ve scored 4 between them and they just weren’t at the races today but we dust ourselves down and get them ready for Wolves.

Disagree! He chose the formation, he had the ability to make changes and took them too late. Part of his job is to be a in game tactician. He is not a “game changer”
— JB (@1MrLondon) March 7, 2020
Agree he is not the one to blame but why does he wait so long with the subs? Love Nobes but he can’t run for more than 60 min.
Game like today was perfect to bring Anderson earlier – Arsenal were poor defensively

‘Noble was gone by 60 minutes’
Should have made changes earlier. Took too long and could see that they were struggling at the back. No excuses for the misses though.
— Keith Champion (@champs1uk) March 7, 2020
He aint got the guts to change things until we go behind! Signs of a poor manager
— Sean Barrett (@seanbarrett_) March 7, 2020
Yeah and if he had changed it then we lost, people would be saying “why change it when it’s working”. The fact is there was no reason to make a change, so he held it off, then they got a deflection goal and everything changed.
— WHUgameday (@WHUgameday) March 7, 2020
I disagree with some of this. Noble was gone by the 60th minute, Fornals struggled and Antonio/Haller should of been brought off. He never changes things till it’s too late. He is so stubborn
— Pete Tyrrell (@ABluntBastard) March 7, 2020
Yes – worst ever manager at subs. Strong bench and requirement was obvious
— tony poulter (@bellevuehill) March 7, 2020
100% subs introduced too late but forwards were woeful today.
— Martinstuartpharo父 (@ironboy1972) March 7, 2020
Should have had Anderson on for the last 20 running at sokratis
— Rossco (@REllenor) March 7, 2020
They should of scored but leaving it so late to make a change when we clearly needed and were able to get something from this game is ludicrous and gutless.
— Richard (@RichardL_79) March 7, 2020
I agree with what you say but Souceck and Anderson should have been on much earlier. Hard to get into a game on the 86th minute?
