West Ham United could get their way over how the season ends with a little bit of help from Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane.

The coronavirus pandemic has shut down football until April 30th at the earliest.

West Ham were due to go to injury-ravaged rivals Tottenham last Friday night in their latest postponed match since the outbreak.

There is growing uncertainty over when or indeed if West Ham, Spurs or the other 18 Premier League clubs will resume and complete the season.

Brady made West Ham’s stance clear as Spurs are criticised

West Ham vice-chairman Karren Brady wasted little time letting everyone know where the Hammers board stood over the matter.

Unpopular figure Brady told The Sun just days after the season was shutdown that the campaign should be “null and void.”

The West Ham chief was widely criticised for her comments. Her close friend and Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy got a taste of that yesterday when it was announced Spurs were following Newcastle’s lead in furloughing staff despite the mega riches sloshing around the Premier League (talkSPORT).

West Ham fans feel Brady dragged their name through the mud by advocating the season should be cancelled.

But various reports since have suggested there is increasing support for such a move.

Tottenham hero Kane key to West Ham getting their way – report

And the Independent claims Tottenham star Harry Kane could play a key role in West Ham getting their own way.

At least four clubs believe scrapping the 2019/20 campaign is now a realistic option according to the Independent.

The report states the clubs – one of them believed to be West Ham based on their precarious league position and Brady’s very public stance – feel the money saved by staying in the Premier League outweighs what broadcasters would be owed if the campaign was scrapped.

Spurs hero Kane then added his considerable weight to the debate at the weekend, telling Jamie Redknapp the season should be voided if it can’t be finished by June (Sky Sports).

And it is Kane’s backing for such an unprecedented measure that could prove most telling in West Ham getting their way says the Independent.

“As Premier League officials pored over documents when the coronavirus crisis first began to spread, a simple but stark reality became apparent: there was absolutely no provision for a situation like this,” The Independent reports.

Rivals accused of self-interest but is there any other solution?

“It was never considered that football could just stop. That vacuum has started up intense discussion about what can be done next, with all manner of solutions encouraged, but one of the more drastic suggestions has picked up momentum in the last few days. That is to void the season.

“At least four clubs now favour it, with Harry Kane then adding his backing on Sunday. Figures like Kane speaking out has fostered a feeling the momentum behind it could grow, especially the longer the postponement goes on without any solution.”

A void season would likely open up a raft of legal challenges from the EFL and clubs vying for Champions League spots.

But against the backdrop of what is expected to be tens of thousands of deaths in this country alone, football’s financially motivated insistence on finishing matches is a huge PR own goal for the game at a time when it has never been more insignificant.

The country is supporting new heroes at the moment, NHS doctors, nurses and key worker staff.

West Ham and Tottenham may both be accused of self-interest. Ruling the season null and void would see the Hammers – out of the bottom three on goal difference with nine games to go – remain in the Premier League.

And Spurs, seven points adrift of the top four, would likely remain in the Champions League too if – as expected – last season’s clubs are reinstated to the competition for a new season.
