After that victory, Jose Mourinho was very complementary of Issa Diop, one of Manuel Pellegrini’s summer recruits. Later, it emerged that the Hammers beat a host of clubs, including Spurs, to his signature.

Marko Arnautovic admitted that he is currently playing through injury – which is a situation Pellegrini must monitor carefully as the season progresses.

Excitement continued to grow around young Hammers; Grady Diangana is to be handed an extended run in the first team squad, which set tongues wagging about the prospects of Conor Coventry and Joe Powell.

The fans are less excited about the potential return of Andy Carroll, who is expected to return in a matter of weeks.

Declan Rice was in the headlines once more. The teenager once more rejected a call-up from the Republic of Ireland, preferring to focus on his club form before deciding. England have been impressed by his recent form and are desperate for him to declare for the Three Lions.

His contract saga is still rumbling, but it emerged that Pablo Zabaleta is in line for an extension if he 25 league games this season.

Pedro Obiang is another player Pellegrini will be hoping to keep, but Atalanta are reportedly keen to bring the powerhouse back to Serie A.

Carlos Sanchez and Jack Wilshere’s injuries leave Pellegrini light in midfield and he has been linked with a move for PSV midfielder Jorrit Hendrix.
