West Ham striker Marko Arnautovic scored twice for Austria last night but could not prevent them from losing 4-2 against Israel in the Euro 2020 qualifiers.
The 29-year-old has been out of form for the Hammers and last found the net in January. Since then, he has tried to force a move away but he remains a West Ham player.
Arnautovic’s brace for Austria divided opinion among West Ham fans. Some think it is good news as he could be back on form; others think he tries harder for Austria than he does for West Ham.
Marko Arnautovic before January
Prior to the January transfer window, Arnautovic was a fan favourite and West Ham’s talisman. He netted 11 goals last season to keep West Ham up and started the season brightly.
Despite a few injury niggles, the Austrian forward scored eight goals in all competitions for West Ham before his January transfer saga.
Arnautovic was linked with a £45m move to China (The Times) and his head was turned by the riches in the East.
He expressed a desire to leave West Ham and make his move to China, but that failed to materialise and he has since signed a contract extension at The London Stadium.
Marko Arnautovic since China transfer saga
Since declaring his commitment to West Ham, Arnautovic has mainly been used as a substitute. But he was given his first start against Huddersfield Town recently.
However, West Ham fans have not been impressed with Arnie and his lack of form since missing out on a China move.
Below are several tweets from West Ham fans discussing Arnautovic’s brace for Austria and whether that’s good news for the club.
Are you serious? Doesn’t give any signs that he has a goal or performance in him for West Ham. In my opinion, not even worth a place in the squad at the moment.

Arnautovic got two goals and was incredible today needs to start next game and don’t say it’s because he played for Austria because he tried just as hard as he does for us they just give the ball to him more than we currently do.

Agreed Needs to regain form ASAP. He then will attract buyers and boost transfer value. Really Don’t want to be stuck with him next season

People saying that he „walks uninterested” probably don’t want to see the stats.
Against Huddersfield, Marko Arnautovic covered more ground and made more touches than any other forward of ours (apart from Anderson) despite playing for just 45 minutes.
Shut up and support him. https://t.co/BoYvCtcd55

I don’t think it’s worth the risk. He’s had lots of chances since the new year and been rubbish. The team also play much better without him now.

I agree. It will do him the power of good

Arnautovic scored 2 goals on international duty for Austria yesterday. Hopefully this gives him some confidence and improves his form so he can score some goals between now and the end of the season pic.twitter.com/snsUVztGf6

Makes no difference though does it. He wants to play for his country so tries. For us he walks about looking uninterested
