West Ham United fans have been reacting after Winston Reid played for the first time in three months last night.

Forgotten man Reid has endured a 19-month injury hell.

Reid has been pencilled in for a return to action with West Ham’s Under 23 side in recent weeks. But each time his return has been hyped up only to prove to be a false dawn.

The 31-year-old has not played a competitive match for the Hammers since March 2018.

Reid has been sidelined since he suffered a terrible injury against Swansea. The New Zealander was knocked unconscious and as he fell to the ground awkwardly, seriously injured his knee.

Light at the end of the tunnel

There was finally some light at the end of the tunnel for Reid, West Ham fans and Hammers boss Manuel Pellegrini on Wednesday night, though.

Reid played over an hour of the development side’s last gasp 3-2 defeat to Wolfsburg’s second string in the Premier League International Cup.

It is the first step on the presumably long road back to first team football for the Kiwi.

But it is an important milestone in the process.

And Reid was heavily involved at both ends on his return to action. The defender made several timely interceptions at the back. He showed coolness in possession and went close to getting his head to a corner to make it a goalscoring return.

Reid heavily involved on welcome return

Perhaps his biggest moment in the match came when he was denied what some felt was a penalty after being barged from behind in the Wolfsburg box at a corner.

Reid was withdrawn on 64 minutes, making way for young star Jamal Baptiste, who was recently hailed as the new Issa Diop by former Academy boss Terry Westley (Claret & Hugh).

In the grand scheme of things, it was a positive night for the Hammers despite the defeat.

And some West Ham fans reacted to Reid’s return on Twitter.
