Some West Ham United fans have called on the club to sign a new number one goalkeeper after an update on Lukasz Fabianski’s injury.
West Ham fans were worried the club were rushing their star player back when Fabianski returned after three months out over Christmas.
And supporters thought those fears had been realised when the goalkeeper broke down 13 minutes into the defeat at Sheffield United last time out.
Good news after Fabianski scan
But there was some good news for a change after an anxious wait the result of a scan on Monday.
West Ham announced Fabianski had only suffered inflammation of scar tissue from his previous injury (whufc.com).
As a result the Poland star will only be out for two weeks.
The Hammers have been linked with a host of goalkeepers this transfer window.
Darren Randolph was expected to return from Middlesbrough. But concerns over an existing injury have delayed and may even scupper that move (The Daily Mail).
Randolph and Etheridge linked
Neil Etheridge is the next on West Ham’s list (Football Insider) but the Hammers face competition.
Fabianski’s injury scare has seen fans react in their numbers.
And some have suggested the club simply has to sign a new number one goalkeeper.
Their reasoning is multi-faceted.
Some West Ham fans call for club to sign new number one
Fans feel it will give Fabianski as much time as possible to recover without being rushed back.
That having a new top class ‘keeper would also mean the club does not have to rely on the hapless Roberto while David Martin can remain as third choice back-up.
That Fabianski would be pushed harder for his place and competition is healthy in football. And that at 34-years-old, West Ham need someone ready to take over when the time comes.
Here are a selection of reactions from West Ham fans to the Fabianski update:
Let’s buy a goalkeeper anyway. David Martin as a backup is OK, but we hopefully will be replacing Roberto anyway.

Desperately need a new no1, love Fabs to bits, but we can’t risk him breaking down imo ⚒

I don’t know mate, at 34 and now getting injuries we should be looking, it’s to an important position to risk imo

Great news but don’t rush him back & injure him long term!
Maybe let someone else take his goal kicks as well for a few games?

You’re not factoring in the West Ham curse which adds 2 months on.

I’m no doctor but surely 2 weeks is rushing him back again!! There’s clearly an issue with his hip. The board should have been all over this way before Xmas when Fab first got injured and brought in a decent back up keeper instead of pretending to go for unknown Benfica players🙄

Can’t recall a player who’s absence has had a bigger impact on a football team’s form or results than Fabianski’s absence has on West Ham. The contract of with him and without him is incredible. He is by far our most important player at the club.

Until he gets injured again in a couple weeks because you lot wont spend any money. Get out the club now

Get him on the pain killers

‘Wow how convenient’
Now do we risk Martin as 2nd choice or bring in Etheridge, I hope the latter, he’s a top quality keeper, but knowing the tight arses who are in control the club, won’t happen.

Sulli can put his loan wallet away for another window he’ll be extremely relieved then. What’s the betting he breaks down just after the window shuts

Lol so what you going to do about it? You need better cover

Sign a keeper in the mean time and maybe a few other players, cause we have a relegation battle on our hands
— Tom (@TomMB1994) January 13, 2020
Wow , how convenient. That’s basically all that’s left in the transfer window.. so the board has a built in excuse not to spend..
