Angelo Ogbonna is expected to fill in for Kurt Zouma for West Ham against Manchester City tonight.
Hammers boss David Moyes is a huge fan of the 34-year-old Italian, and clearly rates him higher than Thilo Kehrer as a centre-back.
Oggy, who ears £68k-a-week at the London Stadium (Salary Sport), was a key player for West Ham last season until he was rued out for eight months with an ACL injury. Unsurprisingly, the Hammers’ Premier League form dropped off massively without the experienced centre-back.
Despite returning to full fitness at the start of this season though, he hasn’t featured regularly for the Hammers, with only nine Premier League starts to his name thus far (Who Scored). It seems as though Ogbonna could be set to add another start to that tally tonight though…
Moyes will hand West Ham ace Ogbonna a start vs Manchester City
According to a report from The Guardian, the 34-year-old Italian will come into the side in place of Kurt Zouma at the Etihad tonight.
That’s no real surprise is it, given the fact that Moyes chose to bring Ogbonna on in place of Zouma on Saturday afternoon.
Despite his age, the Italian is still a very good defender and is an unbelievable leader – a trait that not too many players at the London Stadium possess.
Ogbonna is an accomplished organiser, and given some of our defensive problems of late, it will be good to have him back in the side.
However, it must be said that the West Ham defender’s lack of pace worries me against Manchester City. The fact that we will probably have two left-footed centre-backs playing tonight is also a concern, unless Moyes drafts in Thile Kehrer for Nayef Aguerd.
In spite of all that, I’m more than confident that Angelo Ogbonna will do a solid job for the Hammers at the Etihad.
