Some West Ham United fans have been left gutted after the Carabao Cup third round draw paired them with Oxford United.

That’s because for the second time this year West Ham have come excruciatingly close to a cup tie against bitter rivals Millwall.

Earlier this year West Ham suffered a dismal 4-2 defeat to AFC Wimbledon in the FA Cup fourth round.

It was one of the worst performances and results in West Ham’s modern history.

It couldn’t happen again… could it?

And it was made all the more frustrating after Wimbledon drew Millwall in the next round.

The balls for the draw are numbered by tie. That means West Ham would have ended up playing their arch rivals.

And it was a case of de ja vu on Wednesday night but roles reversed.

West Ham beat Newport County 2-0 to be in the hat and were drawn to play Oxford United away next month.

Roles reversed as Millwall spoil the party

Millwall were beating Oxford 2-0 with 87 minutes on the clock but somehow went on to concede two in the dying moments before losing on penalties.

The galling reality has taken the edge off the draw for both sets of fans.

While the Met Police will be breathing a sigh of relief, Hammers fans are not.

Some took to Twitter to vent their frustrations and give their reaction to the third round draw. Including one supporter who predicted the draw as soon as he had seen Millwall throw away their match.
