West Ham have a lot of work to do in the January transfer window – regardless of who is in control.
The Hammers are in a complete mess at the moment and need things to change at both ends of the pitch. Too many goals are being conceded; not enough goals are being scored. It’s a recipe for disaster as West Ham continue to slide down the table.
David Sullivan and David Gold need to show ambition in January. Otherwise, West Ham will never press on. This is why they should make funds available to sign Hull City star Jarrod Bowen. Here’s why.
Jarrod Bowen: The next James Maddison?
West Ham are lacking that cutting edge going forward. Sebastien Haller’s form has slowed since his rapid start. Albian Ajeti is failing to convince. Michail Antonio is the most dangerous outlet but he is a constant injury worry.
Meanwhile, the midfielders are inconsistent. Felipe Anderson, Pablo Fornals and Andriy Yarmolenko have all shown glimpses this season but have not produced anywhere near enough.
Bowen could change all that for West Ham. In a mid-table Hull side, he is a constant menace. Championship defenders simply do not know how to deal with the left-footed winger, who drifts in off the right flank and plays off a target man.
Tom Eaves is the big man up front for Hull. Bowen thrives in the space around Eaves. Meanwhile, Haller is often left isolated at West Ham. This could bring the best out of the Frenchman and it could give Bowen the license to continue what he is doing.
Bowen’s goalscoring record cannot be sniffed at. This season, he has 16 goals in just 22 games (with three assists too). He has 53 goals in 121 games for Hull, which is remarkable for a young winger.
West Ham passed up on the opportunity to sign James Maddison in the past. That has now been proven as a massive mistake. Let’s get Bowen before his price rockets out of control.
