Another poor performance from Angelo Ogbonna has prompted West Ham fans to call for a new centre-back this month.
Ogbonna has been filling in for the injured Fabian Balbuena but he has struggled with his form.
West Ham could move for a new centre-back this month and reports are linking the club with a move for Martin Skrtel.
According to Turkish media outlet Fanatik, West Ham, Crystal Palace and Southampton are keen on Skrtel, who plays for Fenerbahce.
But this would be a backwards step for the Hammers if they snapped up the ex-Liverpool man.
West Ham’s central defensive situation
West Ham’s undoubted first-choice central defensive partnership consists of summer signings Issa Diop and Balbuena.
Ogbonna is the first reserve but he has struggled when called upon this season.
Winston Reid remains sidelined for a significant period of time and there are doubts over whether the New Zealand international will ever be the same again.
Declan Rice can also fit in there but he is important in midfield, while Reece Oxford appears to have no future at the club.
Martin Skrtel: a backwards step
Skrtel would not be an upgrade on West Ham’s current options.
At 34, the veteran defender’s best years are behind him and West Ham must consider younger options.
Skrtel is a downgrade on Ogbonna and Manuel Pellegrini might as well use Oxford if he is that desperate.
The Slovakia international offers experience but his discipline record, lack of speed and age are major concerns.
West Ham should instead look at younger centre-backs with the potential to improve, while deputising for Diop and Balbuena in the short-term.
