West Ham United are reportedly lining up an historic pre-season friendly against Scottish giants Rangers this summer.

According to Claret & Hugh, which regularly claims to have a top level source inside West Ham – believed to be the club’s owners themselves – the Hammers want to play Rangers at the London Stadium regardless of what division they are in.

The proposed match would be momentous because West Ham and Rangers have never played one another before in the 125 years the Hammers have been in existence. Rangers were founded in 1872 and West Ham in 1895.

It would see the Hammers come up against FA Cup heartbreaker Steven Gerrard once again.

West Ham planning pre-season match against Rangers?

West Ham have historically looked to play a high-profile pre-season friendly the week before the season begins.

The club played Juventus to officially open the London Stadium as their home ground back in 2016.

And they faced Atletico Bilbao last summer. There have also been games against Werder Bremen, Napoli and Roma in the not so distant past.

But to fix up a match against Rangers might be easier said than done.

If West Ham stay up this season, the new Premier League campaign begins on August 8th.

Fixing a date might be easier said than done

If they are relegated, the Championship season gets underway a week earlier on August 1st – the same day as the Scottish Premiership season.

So regardless of what division West Ham are in, they could only realistically play Rangers on the weekend of July 25th.

But then there are European considerations to take into account.

Rangers will likely be involved in Champions League or Europa League qualifiers throughout July.

Tight window for historic friendly

And West Ham’s London Stadium is being used for the Anniversary Games athletics event on July 4th and 5th.

The turnaround to transform the London Stadium back into football mode is around a week to 10 days.

So it leaves a very finite window for a friendly against the Gers.

If it does go ahead there appears to be only two weekends where it might be possible, July 18th and 25th – dependent on Rangers’s aforementioned potential European commitments.
