Gary Cahill on a free transfer would be a really smart signing for West Ham before next week’s deadline.
The Hammers have brought in some incredibly exciting new signings this summer, with Sebastien Haller and Pablo Fornals arriving from Germany and Spain respectively.
Manuel Pellegrini’s side have looked very shaky defensively during pre-season, however.
So the Chilean really should be looking to add another established centre-back.
Winston Reid’s injury problems will be a real concern for West Ham. And with just Fabian Balbuena, Issa Diop and Angelo Ogbonna as central defensive options, the east London outfit could really do with someone like Cahill.
The 33-year-old has won pretty much all there is to win in the game, with two Premier League titles and a Champions League winner’s medal to his name.
Cahill has also been capped 61 times by the England national team.
The former Chelsea man really is a great defender. He is strong in the air, tenacious in the tackle, and would add a real level of solidarity and steel to West Ham’s backline.
His availability on a free transfer makes a move for him an absolute no-brainer for the Hammers.
Even if he doesn’t start every week, he would be a great character to have around the dressing room. And that in itself would surely help improve West Ham as a team.
