So West Ham’s hopes of signing Maxi Gomez appear to be dead in the water.
Or do they?
Sky Sports reported yesterday that the Hammers ended talks with Celta Vigo because of their unwillingness to pay his £44.85m release clause in one hit.
And West Ham fans were understandably disappointed upon hearing the news.
Hammers insider ExWHUemployee suggested that there is a scenario where a potential deal could still happen, however.
He wrote on Twitter:
Well technically yes because he hasn’t signed for anyone but word coming out of West Ham yesterday from all the people involved in the deal was that they had lost out and given up.I guess if Valencia somehow fail to secure personal terms then it could reopen-but v unlikely https://t.co/hqbiLeAEKw

So it is not outside the realms of possibility that West Ham could still sign Gomez, as unlikely as that may seem.
It will be vital for the Hammers to move on to other targets, however. They seem to have placed all of their eggs in one basket with Gomez. And with just one month remaining before the new season starts, panic is starting to set in.
There are plenty of options out there, however.
Callum Wilson is now believed to be West Ham’s priority target, according to the Sun.
Aleksandar Mitrovic, Moussa Marega and Salomon Rondon have also been mentioned.
Whatever happens, however, and with Marko Arnautovic now gone, it will be crucial for Pellegrini to sign at least two established front-men, if his side are to challenge for the top six this season.
