Winston Reid has left West Ham to link up with Sporting Kansas City on loan (BBC), and some Hammers fans have taken to Twitter in reaction to the news.
The 31-year-old joined the east London outfit in 2010 for around £5 million (Eurosport).
The 25-capped New Zealand international has gone on to make 223 appearances in all competitions for the Hammers. During that time he racked up 10 goals and 10 assists (Transfermarkt).
Reid is a popular player at the London Stadium, but unfortunately for him, he hasn’t played a senior game for West Ham since March 2018.
The 31-year-old moving to the MLS to get some regular game time is probably the right call for all parties involved.
The ideal outcome would be for Reid to get plenty of minutes under his belt in America, and then return to the London Staidum in the summer fully fit and raring to go next season.
He is currently earning £70,000 per week, however, and ExWHUemployee claimed on Twitter this morning that West Ham’s aim is to move him on permanently in the summer:
I think the aim is to hope he will leave permanently to get his wages off us. He is coming to the end of his career and on large wages and hasn’t played for two years. In my opinion we need to invest in another solid centre back if he does permanently go. https://t.co/lB4V3pyEng

In truth, nobody knows what the future holds for Reid. It’s just such a shame that he has been robbed of the chance to play regularly for the Hammers over the past couple of years.
And some West Ham fans took to Twitter in reaction to his loan move to the MLS…

It’s a sad day for the whammers, good luck Winston

His performance levels since coming back after the injury must have been really poor. So sad, as he was one of our most committed defenders that, in the form he was in pre-injury, we could do with now.

why? seriously, we need him massively

Best of luck to the guy. Would be great for him to be able to play himself back into first-team fitness.
