West Ham United fans were gutted when their move for Maxi Gomez hit the buffers this week.

West Ham have been chasing Celta Vigo striker Gomez all summer.

But a club record move was ruled out after West Ham failed to agree a payment structure (Sky Sports).

The Uruguayan is now expected to join Valencia instead.

Fans left flat by long Gomez saga

After a protracted saga, with a new twist seemingly every few hours, West Ham’s failure to land the 22-year-old has left many fans feeling flat.

A lack of quality alternatives has supporters worried.

And the departures of Andy Carroll, Lucas Perez and Marko Arnautovic means Pellegrini only has Javier Hernandez left on the books, a player who was expected to be one of the first out of the door.

But West Ham fans are famous for their gallows humour and terrace wit.

Hammers fans famed for their wit

The Hammers faithful are a self-deprecating bunch too, and they have certainly needed to be over the years.

That has come to the fore once again after a brilliant fan-made Ceefax image of West Ham headlines emerged online.

The picture in old BBC Ceefax style – before the days of the internet – has been widely shared among fans on WhatsApp.

Among the headlines are:

West Ham Twitter in full meltdown. Fans admit they’d never heard of Gomez. And Gold and Sullivan blamed for everything.

The image which you can see below is West Ham fans at their best.

Fortune may always be hiding. But we’ll always see the funny side.
