West Ham United could replace Manuel Pellegrini with former manager Harry Redknapp.
That’s according to a report from Football Insider which claims the out of work 72-year-old is a ‘shock contender’ should Pellegrini be axed.
West Ham’s struggles are well documented.
Tipped for the European places after a bright start, Pellegrini’s side have plummeted from third in the league to the brink of the relegation zone.
Pellegrini on the brink
Defeat to Southampton on Saturday will almost certainly see West Ham spend Christmas in the relegation zone.
And that will result in Pellegrini losing his job according to widespread reports.
Football Insider claims a West Ham source has told them David Sullivan and David Gold are looking at Redknapp as an interim option for the rest of the season.
Redknapp has always divided opinion among West Ham fans.
Many remember his tenure as manager for giving the club some of their best times of the last 30 years.
Redknapp ‘shock contender’ despite chequered Hammers past
Others feel he must take his share of the blame for the break-up of the club’s golden generation which started with the departure of Rio Ferdinand and the subsequent failure to reinvest the money in quality replacements to move the club forwards.
Hammers legend Billy Bonds famously dislikes Redknapp in a feud dating back to their time together at the club (The Independent).
Redknapp also went on to manager West Ham’s fierce rivals Tottenham Hotspur after leaving the club. As a former Hammers player and manager of 17 years service, that did not go down well with supporters.
Fan reaction to the Redknapp report has been surprisingly positive, though.
That’s Twitter is anything to go by.
Some West Ham fans surprisingly positive at prospect of Redknapp return
Some fans feel it would be the ideal appointment with many citing Redknapp’s man-management and motivational skills as just what West Ham need.
Here are a selection of posts about the news from Twitter.
Dont care what other west ham fans say, I’d have Redknapp back all day long!!#WHUFC

It was Christmas eve babe, down the West Ham ground
We’re in the bottom three, and look like going down
We need a hero now, to do a smash and grab
Perhaps the man we need is Harry Redknapp …
And the boys of the NYPD choir are blowing bubbles now …🎶
