According to a report from the Daily Mail, West Ham are set to make one final attempt to sign Alaves ace Guillermo Maripan.

The Hammers could really do with another central defender before the transfer window closes.

Manuel Pellegrini has Fabian Balbuena, Issa Diop, Angelo Ogbonna and Winston Reid currently at his disposal.

The New Zealand ace’s well-documented injury problems will be a real concern for the West Ham boss, however.

And Maripan, 25, would be just the ticket for the Hammers.

Standing at 6ft 4in tall, the 21-capped Chile international possesses the kind of physique needed to succeed in the Premier League.

He is strong in the air and tenacious in the challenge, and would be a really impressive addition for West Ham.

According to the Daily Mail, Pellegrini will try to sign Maripan one last time before the transfer window slams shut next week.

The British newspaper claims that the east London outfit had a £9.5 million bid for the 25-year-old rejected two months ago. So they will obviously have to improve upon that offer, if they want to sign the South American.

Maripan is a truly top class defender, and he would undoubtedly add a certain level of solidarity and steel to West Ham’s backline.

Whether Pellegrini can get a deal for his countryman over the line before the transfer window closes, however, remains to be seen.
