West Ham appear to have been dealt a blow in the race for Napoli ace Hirving Lozano, with Italian publication Il Mattino reporting that Everton are leading the chase for the 39-capped Mexico international.
Calcio Mercato claimed that last week that the Hammers want to sign the speedy winger.
The 24-year-old joined Napoli from PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 2019 for around €42 million (£36 million), according to Goal.
Lozano has struggled with Napoli, however. He has racked up just three goals and two assists in 25 outings so far this season (Transfermarkt).
In 16 league games for the Serie A outfit, the Mexico international has just two goals and one assist to his name. He has averaged just 1.3 shots, 0.8 dribbles and 0.8 key passes per game during those outings (Who Scored).
Lozano’s time with PSV proved that he is a truly exceptional talent, however.
The reported West Ham target racked up 40 goals and 23 assists in 79 appearances for the Eredivisie outfit (Transfermarkt).
He is the kind of player who could excel with the Hammers, if given the chance to play regularly.
But with Everton now allegedly leading the race to sign Lozano, West Ham could face an uphill battle to sign the Napoli ace.
