Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey spoke to reporters after his side’s win over West Ham, and highlighted how he and his teammates exploited the hosts’ weaknesses, as quoted by One Football.

The Magpies were magnificent against the Hammers, and thoroughly deserved their win.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side, meanwhile, were incredibly poor, and Saturday’s defeat to the Toon would have been a real wake-up call for them.

Many expected West Ham to earn a vital three points against Newcastle at the weekend. They were brushed aside after just 51 minutes, however, and never had a genuine chance of winning the game.

Shelvey, who scored his side’s third goal, spoke to reporters after the game, and highlighted where the Newcastle players knew they could get at the Hammers, as quoted by One Football:

“We know that Pellegrini’s teams like to play a high line. The gaffer spoke about it before. They (West Ham) always struggle with runners from deep and we worked on it in training and it paid off. It was a great win and we dug deep in the last 20 minutes. In the first half we should have been four goals up.”

It is clear that West Ham have become incredibly predictable to play against. And that is really worrying. Pellegrini seems to be hesitant to change things up. Whether that’s just old-fashioned stubbornness or a lack of awareness, however, is unclear.

One thing’s for certain – the Hammers need to try something different if they are to climb out of their current slump.

Things don’t get any easier for West Ham, however. They face Burnley away next, and a defeat at Turf Moor really would pile the pressure on Pellegrini.
