Can he do it on a cold Monday night at Stoke?

That is the now famous litmus test applied to players and teams in the recent past and for West Ham United star Winston Reid that is very apt today.

West Ham defender and cult hero Reid has been pencilled in for a return to action in the Under-23s game at Stoke tonight as he bids to resurrect his career after 19 months out.

Reid has not played a competitive match for West Ham since March 2018.

Reid’s return?

Reports over the weekend claimed he will be in the squad for the development side’s game at Stoke (Evening Standard).

The 31-year-old has been sidelined since he suffered a terrible injury against Swansea. The New Zealander was knocked unconscious and as he fell to the ground awkwardly, seriously injured his knee.

Reid returned in pre-season and featured in three games but has not been seen since.

It has been widely reported he suffered a setback. The 31-year-old was supposed to line-up for the U23s against Cheltenham two weeks ago but was pulled out of the match.

Can he do it on a cold Monday night at Stoke?

West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini is not desperately in need of Reid at the moment.

He has Issa Diop, Angelo Ogbonna and Fabian Balbuena all fit. But a fit and firing Reid would only benefit the Hammers.

Now it is up to Reid to answer that question: ‘Can he do it on a cold night at Stoke’.

Everyone at West Ham hopes so.
