No less than seven West Ham academy players have been called up by England at various youth levels this week. This is excellent recognition for the club who are consistently producing talent that is good enough to represent their national team.

Four of the youngsters will link up with England’s under-15 side, who face Belgium this week. These players include: Jacob Knightbridge, Junior Robinson, Divin Mubama and Sonny Perkins. Despite the fact that these players are still very young and with no guarantee of success, it is a hugely positive step for the academy.

At under-16 level there are a further three call ups for the young Hammers. Jamal Baptiste and Jayden Fevrier are regularly playing with the West Ham under-18 side this season, showing their maturity and capabilities to play above their age group.

The final call up at under-16 level is for Amadou Diallo, who turns 16 this week. This makes the fact that he has been regularly playing for West Ham’s under-23 side this season all the more remarkable. He also made his West Ham under-18 debut at the tender age of just 14.

England under-16s will play three matches over the next week, taking on Norway, Brazil and France. This should provide ample game time for the trio who will look to gain experience at an international level.

Academy director Terry Westley was speaking to the club’s official site and gave high praise to his youngsters.

He said: “It’s great recognition for the players and the whole club to have seven of our young players selected for two England squads.

“These lads have been working hard and playing great football all season and every one of them deserves the recognition.”

After several barren years of breakthrough academy talent, it seems as if the tide is turning.

The emergence of Declan Rice and Grady Diangana point to a highly fruitful future for West Ham’s famed academy.
